Many observers don’t know that the UN plays a central role in promoting the worldwide campaign to delegitimize Israel. So far, the US veto power has prevented Israel’s enemies from winning Security Council approval for anti-Israel actions. But the UN Secretariat’s Division for Palestinian Rights and two UN General Assembly committees actively support a coordinated effort to destroy Israel, deliberately modeled on the anti-apartheid campaign against South Africa.
On July 13, 2005, the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People adopted an Action Plan calling for a “global campaign of divestment, boycotts and sanctions to pressure Israel”— urging churches, academic and labor organizations and other “civil society” groups to work together to implement the Action Plan (UN press release, 14 July 2005).

AJIRI publications document how the General Assembly is manipulated by a clever band of operatives working out of UN missions of countries that are anti-Israel (mostly Arab League members) and anti-US (such as Cuba). These operatives created and maintain the anti-Israel propaganda apparatus—funded by the UN—that operates worldwide and year-round.
UN resolutions—and the relentless anti-Israel campaign—are more than mere words. They are a deliberate effort to undermine Israel’s security and economy and to delegitimize the Jewish state. As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu notes, Israel faces three existential dangers: the Iranian nuclear threat, Hezbollah and Hamas rockets—and the international campaign to delegitimize Israel.
Efforts to use the UN to condemn Israel’s self-defense actions in Gaza are part of this campaign. Even though Israeli troops entered Gaza only after Hamas had fired more than 8,000 rockets into Israel, the UN Human Rights Council ordered an investigation of alleged Israeli war crimes in Gaza. The result: the Goldstone Report, which condemned Israel and urged the Security Council to refer charges to the International Criminal Court–actions opposed by the US. But AJIRI’s strategy proved effective: it helped to prevent anti-Israel forces from winning the nine affirmative votes needed for Security Council action. Still, Israel’s enemies are keeping the Goldstone proposals on the General Assembly’s agenda. And they are likely to push other anti-Israel measures—to make it more costly for Israel to exercise its sovereign right of self-defense, and to create a Palestinian state by UN decree, rather than by give-and-take negotiations with Israel.
What is AJIRI’s Strategy to Shut Down the Israel-bashing Apparatus?
AJIRI was founded in 2005 to combat the UN’s campaign against Israel by educating the public—including the Congress—that:
- The UN supports a delegitimization campaign that operates worldwide and year-round, undermining efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
- This campaign is funded through annual UN General Assembly resolutions that authorize two UN committees and a pro-Palestinian division in the UN Secretariat–all controlled by anti-Israel operatives.
- Many of the votes in favor of these resolutions are cast by countries that have good relations with the US and with Israel. But their heads of government are often unaware of votes cast by their UN ambassadors in New York.
- Under the UN Charter, the annual General Assembly resolutions that re-authorize the UN propaganda agencies must be approved by a two-thirds vote because they raise budgetary questions. That means these operations can be terminated if at least one-third-plus-one of the General Assembly members present and voting “yes” or “no” join the US in voting “no”.
